A visual representation of a certain category would be good for users to identify and differentiate other categories.

Perhaps icons, to go along the minimal theme
Colors would be another option, but probably more difficult to distinguish since there are many boards

||If the boards are somewhat locked in stone, someone could write a tiny algoritm to find a set of N colors that are the most (humanly) different from each other, and then we have at least one color per category (for now) :)
