at best, dei gives a shot to people who wouldn't have otherwise got it. at worst, it's virtue signaling. it's not killing anything, but it's an easy thing to point to and get upset about.

as with most reactionary politics, whenever "it's the immigrants' fault" or "it's the gays'/blacks'/whatever fault", it's actually the fault of capital and the capital is trying to distract you. is dei behind stock buybacks? is dei behind return-to-office? is dei behind wage theft?

It pushes people that are less proficient in your team, and it's your responsibility that they succeed even if you couldn't choose them.

that's just every junior though? like have you never worked with someone who was demonstrably not a dei hire and they were absolutely useless?

Sure, but at least there was a (bad) hiring decision behind. Lesson learned. In the case of DEI, it's just fast tracked due to other factors.

It artificially restricts your hiring pool.

I haven't done proper research on the issue, but my guess is that it's probably as you say (it gets overhyped because it's nebulous and bad faith actors can just spam the term to enrage people)

However if a significant part of the population believe it's true, I'd say it's important to focus on how they determine what counts as a DEI hire and what the evidence behind their claims is

If it were the case that "DEI hires are destroying software development" and someone just brushed it off saying I'm racist, that's probably just pushing me further into what I currently believe

If your org actually suffers from not having enough diversity, equity and inclusion, then slapping a label on a OKR and trying to hire more black lesbians won't solve the issue, as usually you need to clear the ranks of management to actually address the issue.

And if you don't suffer from it, no need for labels just continue doing what you're already doing.

All this "DEI this and DEI that" is doing, is making you pleebs less focused on the real fight that should be happening, against the rich. You have people sitting at top positions in governments, egging you on to fight fascism or DEI or for freedom, or whatever, being mislead into thinking this is the important stuff.

You need to go out and protest, and riot, and make your voices heard on the streets, against the rich and powerful. But no, instead you argue about immigration and other shit that doesn't affect you at all as much as the rich holding you down because you're low/middle-class.

The DEI canditate owes their undeserved position and career to the rich people and those in charge, they have no reason to go against their masters? The fault line is not between rich and everyone else, it's rich w/ blacks and pajeets vs. white and asians.

In my opinion, managers are destroying software development.

They only care about being cheap and look like they produce something.

Most of my work is being idle because I have to explain what I do to my non-technical manager, while he only makes uninformed decision all the time planing wrong because he does not have an idea of how long task takes and blocks important features that don't look good for the people on top.

Diversity is not an issue as long as the people who have to deal with the new hire make the decision, we went from not having any women dev in my team to have half the team, honestly while they might not be rock-star devs, it's far nicer to work with them and easier to communicate than other coworkers that are good devs but unapproachable.

What I hate is decisions of hiring cheaper devs outsourcing to India, getting rid of QA arguing that devs can do their own testing, creating bullshit positions like "Principal" when they do the same tasks as before, hiring more Agile coaches who only make my work slower with their almost religious bullshit, nonsense bureaucracy for each minor issue, etc...

That's the issue that people who don't have a clue of software are in charge of how the software is made now.
